Chapter 10
June 2014
The path to a goal is rarely straight. It was hardly in Gusâs mind that he would be making a device that would be suitable for use at home, an add-on to a video game console so that people could play an electronic version of âTruth or Dareâ! Gus wanted to make the world a better place. Blaytentâs investors wanted him to make money. At board meetings, Gus had insisted that the two goals were not incompatible, but the board wanted him to explore that possibility. âWhy not?â they asked. âYouâre already using the Kinect device. You could tap into a vast market. How hard could it be?â It might not be that difficult, but it was distracting and time consuming. Gus asked Julia to look into it.
She was reasonably satisfied with the English version of the Statement Analysis work, and she was confident that she would be able to more or less âplug and playâ other languages and other syntax into the system, but not without help from other language experts. There would always be the issue of timing because the Blaytent system did not afford the luxury of a completed statement, but was performing the analysis on the fly in real time.
Chris Pinel hadnât been seen since his confession. Ms Gudmudgion was relying on Julia to provide reports on Blaytentâs economics that were still all flowing out with nothing flowing in. Julia could clearly see the bottom of their economic âwellâ now. The thought of actually producing a marketable device struck her as being a great idea. She wasnât clear on how they would produce it or promote it, but that was someone elseâs problem. She turned her thoughts toward how to package the technology that they were developing into something anyone could use. Much of that had to do with providing user-friendly interpretations of all the graphs and other scientific squiggles that Cranky Franky produced. And they would have to come up with a better marketing name for the product. The fact that the artificial intelligence (although she was nervous about calling it artificial for fear of offending what she thought of as the creature behind the curtain) . . . actually found some things funny and would randomly put words together, intrigued her.
Back in her apartment, there was certainly more talk about work than either Julia or Boyd would have liked. Boyd was spending a significant amount of time trying to unravel where IIDT was coming from in their threatened suit. Since he had to bill Blaytent for his time and Julia had to review those costs, it added another gnarl to their relationship. But they couldnât talk about that.
One evening in early June after they had finished another simple but tasty and filling meal that Julia had concocted and they were sitting back sipping a nice Chianti, Boyd asked how the consumer version project was going.
âFine,â Julia responded.
âWhatâs the thought on how youâre going to bring it to market? Itâs almost too late for the Christmas products.
